A day after jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain complained to the court about inadequate food and a 28 kg weight loss, more footage from Tihar Jail surfaced in an apparent counter move.

After the viral video of Satyendar Jain receiving a massage in his jail cell, new CCTV footage shows him eating salad, fruits and food from plastic containers.

Tihar Jail sources today said footage captured over three days in September and October claimed that the minister was not getting proper food in the jail. Sources claimed that the minister had not lost 28 kg but had actually “put on 8 kg” in jail.

Videos showing the minister getting a massage in a jail cell have been the subject of a sharp political row between Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP ahead of the civic polls.

AAP’s claim that the minister was getting physiotherapy was refuted by jail officials, who said the masseur was another inmate who is accused of raping his own daughter.

Mr Jain’s complaint to a Delhi court that he was being “starved” in jail, especially during religious fasting, sparked another set of CCTV videos from his cell.

Mr Jain had said in an application that he had been denied proper food and medicine since his arrest on May 31. For the past 12 days, the jail administration has stopped providing them basic food in line with their religious beliefs, Mr Jain alleged.

His application states, “The applicant is being kept hungry by the jail authorities and is not being fed or nourished for his well-being. The applicant is entitled to the said basic food item in view of his religious beliefs and fasting”

His lawyer argued that the minister banned cooked food, pulses, cereals and milk products, and said Mr Jain was a “staunch follower of Jainism”.

“For the past about six months, he has been surviving only on fruits, vegetables, seeds and dry fruits or dates. This he was buying from his quota of ration available to all prisoners. Meanwhile, he has suffered a major injury in the jail which has caused severe spinal injury, which was treated at LNJP Hospital. He also has patches of lungs, which is a post-Covid symptom,” Mr Jain’s application claimed.

“The Jail Administration has stopped providing fruits or vegetables, mixed seeds, dry fruits and dates to the applicant. Since the applicant has been on a religious fast for the last six months – such basic food items for his sustenance, nutrition and survival Dietary intake is essential,” it said, flagging “a serious risk of protein and iron deficiency”.

Withholding food during the fast was “illegal”, “arbitrary” and amounted to “harassment”, Mr Jain complained, citing his “right to a dignified human life”.

Mr. Jain was arrested in a money laundering case and was accused of corruption. His bail was rejected last week.
