Mohammed Zubair Of AltNews Arrested: AltNews co-founder Prateek Sinha says that Mohammad Zubair was called for questioning in a separate case, but was arrested immediately after the case was registered.

Journalist Mohammad Zubair, one of the founders of fact-checking website AltNews, was today arrested by the Delhi Police for hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity.

Mohammed Zubair Of AltNews Arrested: Altnews co-founder Prateek Sinha said Mohammad Zubair was called to Delhi for questioning in a separate case, but he was arrested in this case. Mandatory notice was not given, Mr Sinha alleged. He tweeted, “Despite repeated requests, we are not being given the copy of the FIR.”

However, police said Mr Zubair had joined the investigation in a case registered at the Special Cell police station, and was arrested “after there was sufficient evidence on record”. He is still being questioned and the police will produce him before a magistrate tomorrow seeking further custody.

Founded in 2017 as a non-profit, AltNews is one of the world’s foremost fact-checking outlets. Its founders have been facing online trolling and police cases by right-wing groups for years. One of the most recent cases against Mohammad Zubair was registered a month ago in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh. The charges are similar to the charges for which he was arrested in Delhi.

Lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan reacted angrily to his arrest, saying, “This government is going after those who are exposing hate speech.”
