Mohammad Nabi: After the Asian team failed to make an impact in the T20 World Cup 2022, Mohammad Nabi, the star Afghanistan all-rounder, stepped down from captaincy.
The all-rounder announced his resignation on Twitter. Despite leaving the captaincy, Nabi said he would continue to represent his country on the international stage as a player.
Here’s what Nabi’s statement read:
Dear Compatriots and Cricket Lovers!
AoA;
Our T20 World Cup journey ended with a result neither we nor our supporters expected. As frustrated as you are with the results of matches, we are as well.
Over the last year, our team preparation was not at a level that a captain would want or need for a big tournament. Furthermore, the team management, selection committee, and | were not on the same page during some of the last tours, which affected the team balance.
Due to this, I announce my resignation as a CAPTAIN effective immediately and will continue to play for my country when needed.
It truly means a lot to me that every single one of you came out despite the rain and those who supported us worldwide, your love truly means a lot to us. Afghanistan lives long and prospers.
With best regards,
Mohammad Nabi.
Afghanistan failed to win a single game in the showpiece tournament in Australia. Their two games were abandoned due to rain, but they lost the remaining three to England, Sri Lanka, and Australia.
As a result, they finished bottom of Group 1 in the World Cup. After a tough fight against Australia, they fell just four runs short of the target in their final group stage match.
