Amit Shah Rally in Jammu: Just ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally in Rajouri and Jammu, where a top police officer was murdered last night, mobile internet has been suspended. The Jammu and Kashmir administration cited possible “misuse by miscreants” as the reason for the suspension.
Last evening, Amit Shah arrived in Jammu on the same day the UT’s Director General of Police (DGP) in charge of prisons, Hemant Lohia, was allegedly murdered by his housekeeper. This murder has so far not been linked to terrorism.
Today and tomorrow, Mr Shah will address rallies in Rajouri and Baramulla, where he is expected to announce Pahari status as a Scheduled Tribe (ST). Several other communities have protested for ST status in education and employment.
In preparation for the three-day visit, paramilitary personnel conducted random checks over the past week.
UT elections may take place within a few months, more than three years after the state was divided into two UTs – Ladakh being the other – as Article 370, which provided special status, was repealed.
