Manish Sisodia, a senior Aam Aadmi Party leader, is being tortured by the CBI, the party claims. AAP leader Sanjay Singh says CBI officers want him to sign a “false confession”.
The Aam Aadmi Party says Manish Sisodia is being tortured by the Central Bureau of Investigation. In a press conference today, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said the CBI wants him to sign a “false confession”.
The CBI has been holding Manish Sisodia on remand for the past six days. We’ve got information that he’s being tortured to sign a false confession,” Mr Singh said.
His lawyer told him yesterday that Mr Sisodia had said this.
It’s unfortunate for someone who works for poor children, whose work is being recognized by the world, if the American President’s wife comes to India, she wants to see the schools built by Manish Sisodia. The CBI mental tortures him. He’s being mentally harassed, told we’ll give you all the allegations in writing, so sign it,” he said.
The CBI doesn’t have any evidence of dishonesty — that’s why they’re torturing him so he admits (to the wrongdoings).
Mr Singh said the CBI doesn’t have any evidence against Sisodia. They raided his house and didn’t find anything.
We’re waiting for the CBI’s response. According to sources, statements recorded by the CBI under Section 161 of CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) aren’t signed. Also, these statements aren’t admissible in court. Under Section 164 of the CrPC, confessions can only be recorded before a magistrate.
Mr Sisodia was arrested last Sunday for the alleged liquor scam in Delhi. According to the CBI First Information Report, he’s accused number one and will be questioned until March 6.
Yesterday, Sisodia told a Delhi court that he was being asked the same questions over and over, which amounts to “mental harassment”. He said he sat for eight to nine hours answering the same questions.
In the last hearing, the judge asked the CBI not to use the “third degree” on the accused. “If you have anything new, ask him,” the judge said.
CBI says Sisodia isn’t cooperating and giving evasive answers.
Mr Sisodia resigned from Arvind Kejriwal’s cabinet on February 28 after denying all wrongdoing. Back then, he was handling 18 portfolios, which have since been divided between Kailash Gahlot and Raaj Kumar Anand.
Through the arrest of Mr Sisodia, AAP has accused the BJP of trying to sabotage Delhi’s health and education sectors. Arvind Kejriwal says the alleged irregularities in excise policy are an excuse and if Manish Sisodia joins the BJP, he’ll be free by tomorrow.
Earlier this week, Mr Kejriwal told reporters that corruption wasn’t the issue. The motive was to stop the ministers’ good work.
There are eight opposition parties that have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging misuse of central investigation agencies. There’s no Congress on the list.
