After the BJP won the February 16 Assembly elections, Manik Saha took oath for the second time as Tripura Chief Minister. Today, eight more ministers were sworn in.
In Agartala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda took the oath. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, architect of BJP’s Northeast success, accompanied them.
There was also Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khanda, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang. There was also BJP’s Biplab Deb, who was replaced by Mr Saha mid-term.
Four of the new ministers are from the previous government. Their names are Ratan Lal Nath, Pranajit Singha Roy, Shantana Chakma and Sushanta Chowdhury. It inducted three new ministers from its ranks — Tinku Roy, a close friend of Biplab Deb, Bikash Debbarma, a Scheduled Tribes Morcha chief, and Sudhanshu Das.
BJP ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) got one ministerial spot. The IPFT’s Sukla Charan Noatia took oath.
As it reaches out to Tipra Motha again, the ruling party has kept three ministerial berths aside. A deal between the BJP and Tipra Motha, led by former royal Pradyot Manikya Debbarma, earlier fell through.
Sources say Pratima Bhoumik will keep her parliamentary seat and vacate her Dhanpur Assembly seat. To protest post-poll violence in the state, the opposition CPM and Congress are boycotting the swearing-in ceremony.
