The Mangaluru autorickshaw blast accused was “inspired by the ISIS terror group” and used the dark web to contact his handlers, the police said today, claiming a major breakthrough in the case. Karnataka’s top police officer Alok Kumar said that Shariq worked under several mentors, one of them was from Al Hind, a terror organization influenced by ISIS.

The police officer said the accused made bombs at home and even carried out a “trial blast” on the banks of a river.

“Shariq’s immediate handler was Arafat Ali, an accused in two cases. He was in touch with Musavir Hussain, who is an accused in the Al-Hind module case. Abdul Mateen Taha was one of Shariq’s main handlers. Other 2- 3 handlers also worked with Shariq but their identity is yet to be ascertained.”

He said the police have so far conducted searches at five places in Karnataka, including his house in Mysore where material used to make the bomb was seized.

“Shariq was inspired by the ideology of ISIS and made a bomb at his house. On September 19, Shariq along with two other accomplices carried out a test explosion in a forest near a river in Shivamogga,” the police officer said.

The police arrested two of his accomplices the next day, but Shariq managed to escape and took a house on rent in Mysore with the stolen Aadhaar card and continued making bombs.

“We have formed five different teams and they are working on it. Searches were conducted at four places in Tirthahalli town of Shivamogga district and one place in Mangaluru city this morning. Two places were searched yesterday. So , We searched seven places and seized some electronic devices,” said the senior police officer.

A person has been detained in Coimbatore for his alleged links with Shariq. Tamil Nadu Police sources told IndiNews that the man stayed in a dormitory with Shariq and also gave him his Aadhaar card to get a SIM card.

An investigating officer told IndiNews, “We have examined him and verified the circumstances in which he lived with him. He appears to be innocent. We have shared the information with the Mangaluru police.”
