Mahatma Gandhi as Mahishasura: An All India Hindu Mahasabha Durga Puja in Kolkata depicting ‘Mahisasur’ as Mahatma Gandhi sparked a controversy. According to him, the organizers of the puja changed and removed the face after pressure from the home ministry.
After registering a complaint with the police, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha changed the look of the idol.
Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha’s West Bengal state unit working president Chandrachur Goswami told India Today, “We see Gandhi as a true Asur. He is the real Asur. That’s why we made this idol.”
As a result of the central government’s promotion of Mahatma Gandhi, we had to remove the statue and replace it. The Home Ministry has pressed us to do so. “We want Gandhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose removed from everywhere and we want other freedom fighters to gain prominence.” Goswami said.
In mythology, Goddess Durga defeated Mahusura in an epic battle to end her reign of evil. According to the journalist, she was asked by the police to delete the post because it could cause tension during the festival if it contained a picture of a Durga idol.
A political party slams the move for portraying Mahatma Gandhi as Mahishasura
All political parties, including the BJP, CPI (M) and Congress, condemned the move.
The Bengal Provincial Hindu Mahasabha condemned the move. “We condemn what they have done. It’s only to make headlines. They call themselves Hindu Mahasabha. But we think it’s sad.” said the Bengal Provincial Hindu Mahasabha leader.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said if it was actually done, it would be sacrilege.

Such representation was also condemned by the state BJP.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, “If such a step was taken, it is unfortunate. We condemn it. It is in bad taste.”
The Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha also claimed that they were the ‘only’ Hindu Mahasabha party. Chandrachur Goswami said, “All other Hindu Mahasabha organizations are liars. They are all triggered by the BJP.”
Every year, the organizers of the puja choose a theme, primarily a social issue, and use their pandals, statues and lighting to portray it. At times, the traditional Mahishasura was replaced with something representing social evil.
