Vikram-S, India’s first privately developed rocket, successfully blasted off from Sriharikota today, marking the entry of the private sector into the country’s space industry.

The rocket was developed by Skyroot Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based startup, with support from ISRO and IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre).
During the historic launch, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said, “Congratulations, India! It is the beginning of a new dawn. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given life to the dream of the Skyroot co-founders. The Indian ascent for the next 25 years has begun.”
It carried three payloads developed by the Andhra Pradesh-based N Space Tech India, the Chennai-based startup Space Kids, and the Armenian BazoomQ Space Research Lab.
Skyroot Aerospace said Vikram-S reached an altitude of 89.5 km after launch and met all parameters.

Developed by an A-200 engineer team within two years, Vikram-S is powered by solid fuelled propulsion, cutting-edge avionics, and a carbon fiber core.
According to Skyroot Aerospace, the rocket launch will be used to test and validate most of the technologies contained in the Vikram series of orbital class space launch vehicles, including many subsystems and technologies that will be tested during the pre-lift off and post-lift off phases.
The six-metre rocket is one of the world’s first composite rockets with 3D-printed solid thrusters for spin stability.
A Vikram-S rocket has a mass of 545 kg, a length of 6 meters, and a diameter of 0.375 meters, making it one of the most affordable rockets in its category.
Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman of IN-SPACe, told INDINEWS that 150 start-ups are interested in the space sector. He said 150 start-ups have applied to go into space, and so far five have been approved.
