A triangular contest is taking place for the Karnataka assembly elections. The BJP is hoping for another straight term, while the Congress is banking on the revolving door trend. There is a possibility that the JDS, which holds 61 seats, could play spoiler.
BS Yediyurappa, the former Karnataka Chief Minister, was among the first to vote in Shivamogga. Yediyurappa expects 75%-80% of voters to support the BJP. The veteran party leader predicted that his party would win 130-135 seats and form the government.
The Karnataka Chief Minister said he is “very happy” with the way his party conducted its campaign and the response from the people. Mr Bommai appealed to voters to come and vote for Karnataka’s development.
Rahul Gandhi urged voters to vote in large numbers to build a progressive and a “40-percent-commission-free” state. “Karnataka’s vote… for 5 guarantees, for women’s rights, for youth employment, for the upliftment of the poor. Come and vote in large numbers.” Mr Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.
Both parties have run high-profile campaigns. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 19 public meetings and six roadshows, Rahul Gandhi camped in the state for 12 days.
BJP, which is facing multiple corruption allegations, covered all bases in the run-up to the election, including tweaking its four percent Muslim quota to attract votes from Lingayat, Vokkaliga, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes.
The state government in March abolished the decades-old four percent quota for Muslims in the 2B category of ‘Other Backward Castes’ and increased quotas for Vokkaligas and Lingayats. For now, however, the Supreme Court has paused it until further orders, directing that the Muslim reservation will continue. In July, the matter will be heard again.
After being denied a party ticket, several senior Lingayat leaders in the BJP have joined the Congress. As a result, the BJP faces the possibility of a division in the Lingayat vote, which could decide 90 to 100 seats.
As a result of the collapse of the coalition government it ran with Janata Dal Secular chief HD Kumaraswamy, the Congress says it will not need to form another alliance.
Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the party’s state unit chief DK Shivakumar have kept up a united front despite their differences. However, their rivalry over the distribution of tickets revealed the rift within the group.
With HD Deve Gowda, who is in his 90s, planning to retire from politics, this is a crucial election for HD Kumaraswamy’s Janata Dal Secular. While the party had hoped to expand beyond Hassan and Mandya, it is now trying to hold onto its traditional base in Old Mysuru.
