A church in Karnataka’s Mysuru was vandalized on Tuesday, police said. The church’s baby Jesus statue was also damaged.
Two days after Christmas, St Mary’s Church in Periyapatna in Mysuru was vandalized.
To find the accused who are on the run, several police teams have been formed.
To identify the accused, police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the church.
The church staff saw the damage at 6 pm on Tuesday and called a pastor right away. The assailants broke the back door to get in.
Prima Facie looks like it’s a theft, since they made off with money, and also with a collection box outside the church,” said Seema Latkar, Superintendent of Police, Mysuru.
The allegations of forced religious conversion have irked a few churches and Christian missionaries in the last few months.
In Uttarakhand’s Uttarakashi, a group of men with sticks attacked a Christmas program alleging forced conversions were happening.
Two people were arrested in Uttar Pradesh on Monday for allegedly converting people to Christianity.
In Bangalore, they passed an anti-conversion law earlier this year that forbids conversions “by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or any fraudulent means or by any of these means or by promise of marriage”.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said last year that the state was “seriously considering” a similar law like those in BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh.
