Karnataka BJP Youth Worker’s Murder: Large-scale protests have erupted in several parts of Karnataka following the killing of a BJP youth wing worker in Dakshina Kannada district last night.

In many parts of Karnataka, BJP youth wing members have started resigning in a big way from the organization saying that the BJP-led state government has failed to protect the lives of the party workers. Visuals of protesters encircling the car of state BJP president Nalin Kumar Kateel and thrashing him have gone viral.

According to the police, the motorcycle-borne killers attacked Praveen Nettaru, a member of BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, when he was returning home on his bike after closing his poultry shop.

Local residents called the police as the killers had left Netaru covered in blood on the ground. Police took the 32-year-old man lying in a pool of blood to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police said that six police teams have been formed to trace the killers and 15 people have been detained for questioning. Three teams have been sent to neighboring Kerala and Madikeri and Hassan.

The killing has sparked protests in Bellary and Sullia, with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad calling for a bandh. Hundreds of people joined to take his body to his home this morning. Some right-wing organizations have alleged that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India are behind Netaru’s murder.

District police Chief Rushikesh Sonane has said that public gatherings have been banned due to tension in the area. “Three attackers had come on a bike. We have information that the bike had the registration number of Kerala. We are scanning the CCTV footage for clues,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner, Mangaluru, Rajendra said that the matter is being thoroughly investigated. “I spoke to the family regarding the autopsy and funeral. We will send the family’s requests to the government.”

Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai strongly condemned the attack and assured a speedy investigation. He has said that those who commit the heinous act will be arrested soon and punished as per law.

Home Minister Araga Gyanendra said the crime scene is close to the Kerala border and the police is in touch with the neighboring state police to expedite the investigation. “It is natural that there will be anger over the loss of a young man, but I request people to maintain peace,” the home minister said.

Security has been beefed up in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts to prevent any law and order situation. Most of the shops and hotels in the area are closed. In view of the tension in the area, some schools have also declared a holiday.
