CJI D Y Chandrachud: On Wednesday, Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as Chief Justice of India after Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demitted office.
In the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice DY Chandrachud.
There were also prime ministers, including Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nirmala Sitharaman, who attended the event.
Chief Justice UU Lalit retired on November 9 and was succeeded by Justice Chandrachud.
Justice D Y Chandrachud became the country’s 50th head of the judiciary on Wednesday as the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court. His tenure will end on November 10, 2024.
As of November 9, 2022, Dr Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud will be the Chief Justice of India, as announced by the Centre Government last month.
The press statement issued in this regard stated that “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as Chief Justice of India, with effect from November 9, 2022.”
His father, Justice YV Chandrachud, served as the 16th Chief Justice of India from February 2, 1978, to July 11, 1985.
It is the first time in the history of the judiciary that a father and son have been appointed Chief Justice.
Known for his progressive and liberal views, Justice Chandrachud is one of the most respected judges in the country. Additionally, Justice Chandrachud is known for his tough attitude towards abusers and is very sensitive to the fundamental rights of citizens.
On May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud was appointed to the Supreme Court. He was born on November 11, 1959.
From October 31, 2013, until his appointment to the Supreme Court, he served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
As Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Chandrachud served as judge of the Bombay High Court until March 29, 2000.
From 1998 until his appointment as a judge in the Bombay High Court, he had also been the Additional Solicitor General of India.
In June 1998, the Bombay High Court designated him as a senior advocate.
