Earlier this week, Jammu and Kashmir Congress spokesperson Deepika Pushkar Nath resigned from the party, citing its decision to “allow” former minister Lal Singh to join the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra.

She’s leaving the party because Mr Singh sabotaged the Kathua rape case by “brazenly defending” the rapists that raped an eight-year-old nomadic girl.
Singh had switched from Congress to BJP in 2014 and was a minister in the PDP-BJP government that collapsed in June, 2018 after the national party pulled out.
After an uproar over his participation in a rally to support the Kathua rape accused in January 2018, Mr Singh resigned from BJP and formed Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan Party (DSSP).
According to him, he was there to “defuse the situation”.
“With Ch Lal Singh proposing to join @bharatjodo and @INCJammuKashmir allowing the same, I am left with no choice but to resign from @INCIndia(.) Lal Singh was responsible for sabotaging the Kathua rape case in 2018 by brazenly defending rapists.
“Lal Singh divided Jammu & Kashmir to protect the rapists. @bharatjodo is ideologically opposing. I can’t share the party platform with such a person,” Ms Nath wrote on Twitter.
Having been a lawyer for a long time, Ms Deepika Pushkar Nath guided the parents of the victim to the high court in Jammu to monitor the investigation and also to the Supreme Court to get the trial transferred to Pathankot (Punjab).
The AICC’s J&K in-charge Rajni Patil told reporters earlier in the day that anyone who believes in Gandhi’s ideology is welcome to join.
Taking a question about Lal Singh joining the yatra, Patil said, “We’re just focused on our leader’s march.” She said “If he believes Gandhi is bridging the gap between different religions and castes, he’s welcome.” During Gandhi’s hoisting of the national flag at Lal Chowk on January 30, when the yatra’s scheduled to end, the tricolour always flutters high in our party office.
Our party office in Lal Chowk (instead of Clock Tower) will unfurl the tricolor Gandhi is carrying from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
