Gaza’s biggest hospital was the target of Israel’s “targeted operation” against Hamas. Israel could face intensified international criticism for its decision to close the Gaza hospital, which is sheltering thousands of sick, displaced Gazans.

Within al-Shifa hospital, Israeli troops are conducting “a precise and targeted operation against Hamas.”

“The Israeli Defense Forces have reiterated to the relevant authorities in Gaza that all military activities within the hospital must cease within 12 hours,” according to a statement issued by the Israeli Defense Forces. IDF has also asked Hamas operatives to surrender.

In the facility, where fierce fighting and aerial bombardment have trapped at least 2,300 patients, staff, and displaced civilians, the United Nations estimates at least 2,300 people are trapped.

As of Tuesday, 36 babies were being cared for at the hospital, with no clear mechanism in place for evacuating them, according to hospital staff.

Al-Shifa hospital has already lost three premature babies since its generators that kept its incubators going ran out of fuel over the weekend.

The situation has already been described as “catastrophic” by aid agencies and hospital staff. Medical procedures are being conducted without anesthesia, families live in hallways without food or water, and a stench of decay fills the air.

According to hospital director Mohammad Abu Salmiya, bodies litter the hospital complex, and the morgues are without electricity.

Hamas operatives have used Gaza’s hospitals to hide underground tunnels and command posts to hide hostages, according to Israel and the United States.

Al-Shifa hospital operations have been blamed on US President Joe Biden by Hamas.

Taking full responsibility for the assault on Al-Shifa, Hamas said that the occupation (Israel) and President Biden were to blame.
