In an official communication on Tuesday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that a passenger opened the emergency door on an IndiGo flight from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli last year, adding that it had taken note of the incident and ordered an investigation.

According to the DGCA, the flight was bound for Trivandrum, but the carrier later clarified it was going to Tiruchirappalli.

In what is the latest in a string of incidents of passenger misconduct, following two alleged peeing incidents onboard two Air India (AI) international flights, the passenger opened the emergency door and left the others onboard the IndiGo flight 6E-7339. His identity is still unknown.

The IndiGo flight hadn’t taken off yet, so there was no untoward incident.

A senior DGCA official told ANI that the flight regulator had taken note of the incident. The passenger opened the emergency exit door on the RH by mistake while the plane was still on the ground, according to the official. As soon as the crew arrived, they did everything they could to make sure the airworthiness was restored, like reinstalling the door, checking the pressure, and so on. No safety protocol was broken.”

In November last year, a man named Shankar Mishra urinated on a 70-year-old woman in an intoxicated state on an Air India flight.

An elderly passenger filed an FIR against the passenger on January 4. IPC sections 354, 509, and 510 and Indian Aircraft Act Section 23 were used in the case.

Mishra’s contract at Wells Fargo, where he worked, was terminated after a huge public outcry.

Bengaluru eventually apprehended him.
