After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau charged that India got a Khalistani terrorist killed in their country, the government has sought the downsizing of Canada’s diplomatic presence in India.
According to Justin Trudeau, “Indian government agents” were involved in the killing of Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June, who was a wanted terrorist in India. No evidence was provided, but he said there are “credible reasons to believe” so.
Angrily rejecting the allegations, India flagged “politically condoned hate crimes and criminal violence” in Canada. Nijjar’s killing has not been shared by Canada, according to the government.
Furthermore, India sought to reduce the number of Canadian diplomats in its country due to “Canadian diplomatic interference” in its internal affairs. There is too much Canadian diplomatic presence in India and it needs to be downsized, according to the foreign ministry.
Canada has suspended visa services due to “security threats” that prevent officials from administering visas. According to the foreign ministry, our high commissions and consulates in Canada have been facing security threats… this has disrupted their normal operations.
Both countries issued travel advisories after the diplomatic row erupted Tuesday. In view of growing anti-Indian activities, the Indian government has advised its citizens living and traveling in Canada to exercise “utmost caution”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded Trudeau at the Delhi G20 summit for attacking Indian diplomatic missions in Canada after Khalistan supporters attacked Indian diplomatic missions in Canada. A trade mission to India planned for October was postponed a few days later.
After Trudeau suggested that “Indian agents” had shot Nijjar outside a Surrey gurdwara, the ties between India and Canada reached a new low. He said his government had “credible allegations” about it, but did not provide any evidence. The charge was rejected by India as “absurd”.
India and Canada are both important countries for the US, according to the US. Jake Sullivan, US National Security Advisor, said that the US supports the investigation and holds those responsible accountable.
The issue remains a unifying issue within the country. The opposition Congress has backed the government, saying that the country’s interests and concerns must always be the priority. The death of the terrorist has been linked to no government agency, according to parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor.
Since the last few years, Canada has become a hub for expat Sikhs where extremism has mushroomed. Khalistani activities have increased in Canada over the past few months, including protests outside the Indian Embassy and threat posters.
