As COVID-19 horror stories leak out of China and new cases are reported from the US, the center is preparing. As part of the INSACOG network, the Health Ministry has written to all states to increase genome sequencing of positive cases.

It’s imperative to gear up the genome sequencing of positive case samples to track variants through the INSACOG network, Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in the letter to all states, given the sudden surge in cases in Japan, US, Korea, Brazil, and China.
This will enable timely detection of new variants circulating in the country, if any, and facilitate public health measures,” Mr Bhushan says.
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium, or INSACOG, has over 50 labs monitoring COVID-19 genomic variations. The latest virus strains are identified and studied using genome sequencing.
Every day, all positive cases should be sent to INSACOG genome sequencing labs across all states and territories.
Globally, 35 lakh COVID cases are reported every week, the center said. According to the Health Ministry, there were 112 new COVID cases this morning; active cases dropped to 3,490.
The country is dealing with a wave of COVID cases that authorities say are impossible to track, news agency AFP reported.
As a result of the government lifting years of lockdowns, quarantines, and mass testing, cases are soaring across China.
With the potential for further mutations and China’s size, the outbreak is now of concern to the rest of the world.

Covid death statistics will only include people who died directly from respiratory failure caused by the virus.

State Department spokesman Ned Price said any time the virus is spread in the wild, it can mutate and pose a threat to people everywhere. Given the size of China’s economy, the virus’s toll is of concern to the rest of the world.
