Arunachal: Last week, Chinese forces attempted to “unilaterally change the status quo” in Arunachal Pradesh by transgressing the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang.
Rajnath Singh said today that no soldiers were killed or seriously injured in the clash between Indian and Chinese forces on December 9 in Arunachal. After the border clash, the government had spoken with China through diplomatic channels. “Our forces are ready to meet any border challenge,” he said.
However, the Opposition wanted a discussion on the border issue, not just a statement. Opposition MPs walked out in protest. Shaktisinh Gohil, a Congress MP, told NDTV that the government’s “attitude” is wrong.
Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress’ national president, had earlier moved an adjournment motion seeking a suspension of proceedings and a debate on the Arunachal border clash. Similarly, the Trinamool Congress requested a discussion in Rajya Sabha.
In both Houses, proceedings were adjourned shortly after they met, as the Opposition kept insisting that the crucial border clash issue be discussed first. As a question on Rajiv Gandhi Foundation was scheduled for today, Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Congress of disrupting proceedings.
Earlier this week, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke in Lok Sabha, and he will speak in Rajya Sabha shortly. Prior to the meeting, he met with military and diplomatic leaders. To fine-tune the center’s response in Parliament, he also met with the Prime Minister and cabinet colleagues.
Congress leaders, including Manish Tewari and Syed Nasir Hussain, requested a discussion on the Arunachal border clash in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, respectively. Raghav Chadha and Manoj Jha of the RJD have requested a Rajya Sabha discussion. A motion for adjournment has been moved in Lok Sabha by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.
Over the issue, the Congress launched a multi-pronged attack on the government yesterday. The party president said, “We are one with the nation on national security and would not like to politicize it. However, the Modi government must be honest about Chinese transgressions and the construction near the LAC since April 2020.”
Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s in-charge of communications, said the Opposition party has flagged Chinese actions, while the ruling BJP remains silent to “protect its political image”. As a result of the Narendra Modi government’s tendency to suppress the border issue, China’s audacity has been fuelled.
Moreover, the Congress tweeted a video of Prime Minister Modi’s speech after the Galwan clash in which he said that no one had occupied our land or entered India, and no one had occupied any of our posts. The report stated that if China had been named, it would not have dared to look at India.
As a result of a fierce clash at Galwan Valley in Ladakh in 2020, ties between India and China nosedived. There were five Chinese military officers and soldiers killed, but there is widespread belief that the death toll was higher.
