“Something Genuinely Wrong”: India Slams China Move On Pak-Based Terrorist

India has criticized and pinpointed China for opposing a UN resolution that would have designated and nominated Sajid Mir, the leader of the LeT (Lashkar-e-Taiba) organization based in Pakistan, as a “global terrorist,” claiming that this shows a lack of true political resolvement to combat terrorism.

In accordance with the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council, China declined the United States and India’s request on Tuesday to designate Mir as a global terrorist and impose asset freezes, travel bans, and an arms commodity against him.

Following China’s announcement that seemed to lock horns with a proposal to name Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leader Sajid Mir as a “global terrorist,” India responded harshly against it on Wednesday.

India criticized China for trying to stop a UN resolution that would have declared Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Sajid Mir as a global terrorist and sought his prosecution for his role in the twenty-six/November, Mumbai terrorist attacks.

The Indian government said in a harsh and clear statement that if a proposal to blacklist the terrorist cannot pass despite the support of several different gloabal member of other states, then something is genuinely and definitely wrong with the global counter-terrorism framework.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the UN on International Yoga Day hours before this whole episode. India and the US had jointly proposed the resolution to designate Sajid Mir as a global terrorist, subjecting his assets to be freezed, applying travel restrictions, and an arms ban under the Sanctions of 1267 Al-Qaeda Committee of the UN Security Council.

“We really do not have the genuine political will to sincerely fight this challenge of terrorism,” New Delhi argued. The most-wanted terrorists who have been prohibited by the United Nations across global landscapes are a problem, it was claimed.

India posed challenging queries to the UN as well. It posed the question, “Can we have genuine listing proposals blocked without giving the same justification in this day and age of accountability and transparency?” Moreover, “Can we allow for the submission of proposals under the garb of anonymity?”

Sajid Mir’s UN designation as a global terrorist was apparently initially put on hold by China in September. Sajid Mir is one of the most wanted and coveted terrorist in India, and the United States has also placed a $5 million award on his head for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which took the lives of 166 innocent people.

At a UN meeting in Mumbai last year, India showed and played an audio tape as evidence of Mir’s participation. The attack on Chabad House, the terrorist’ objective in the Mumbai attack, can be heard as the terrorists are being directed by Mir on the video.

On the phone, Sajid Mir was instructing the terrorists to look for foreign guests at the Taj Hotel and murder them all indiscriminately.

India encouraged other countries to consider what it is described as an “increasing disconcerting trend” when religion or one type of religiophobia gets “accidentally inserted into the discourse on terrorism.”

As a pluralistic and diverse democracy that is home to all world religions, New Delhi made the following submission: “It is our considered submission that the United Nations Global counter-terrorism framework must treat all religions equally and avoid any selective singling out that tends to elevate one religion over another.”

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court sentenced Mir to more than 15 years in prison in June of last year in a case involving the funding of terrorism. Earlier, Pakistan had claimed Mir had passed away, but many countries expressed skepticism and requested confirmation.

In last year’s Financial Action Task Force (FATF) evaluation of Pakistan’s action plan progress, this became a major sticking point.
