This is the 42nd canceled ODI match of the Indian team’s ODI history. In such a situation, Team India has already made a world record in its name. Every 25th ODI of India gets cancelled.

Detailed Overview of Match Cancellation

The biggest reason behind the cancellation of the match is rain. Although some matches have been canceled even without rain. Will learn more about this. Apart from this, we will see in this story that how many matches of India have been canceled against which team. Along with this, we will also know whether the performance of the match is counted in the record in case of cancellation or not.

First let’s figure out what happens with the audience

If a match is called off without a ball being bowled, the spectators get a full refund. Provided that he has purchased the ticket from an online or offline vendor verified by the host board. Generally, the spectators do not get any money for playing a single ball in the match. Although some cricket boards return the money even in this situation.

Most India-Sri Lanka ODIs canceled

Team India’s maximum number of matches have been canceled in ODI cricket against Sri Lanka. India has played 162 ODIs against Sri Lanka so far. Of these, 11 matches remained inconclusive. These also include the two finals of the 2002 Champions Trophy. It started raining during Sri Lanka’s innings on the first day of the final. There was no play thereafter and the match was moved to the reserve day.

According to the rules of that time, the match was played afresh on the reserve day. This time also it was not possible to play after Sri Lanka’s innings and the match was called off. See in the next picture how many ODI matches against which team of India have been cancelled.

Match canceled due to stone pelting by spectators

It is not that all these matches have been canceled due to rain. The ODI match played against Pakistan in 1989 was canceled due to the bad behavior of the spectators. Pakistani spectators then started pelting stones as their team lost three early wickets.

Similarly, the ODI match between India and Sri Lanka played in Delhi in 2009 was abandoned due to bad pitch. There was a game of 23.3 overs in that match. The pitch was providing uneven bounce which made the batsmen prone to injury.

The match is not canceled after how many overs are played

According to the current rules of the ICC, if at least 20-20 overs are played in both innings of an ODI match, then the match is not cancelled. The decision is then taken according to the Duckworth-Lewis rule.

If it is known from the beginning that this match will be of 20-20 overs only, then Duckworth-Lewis has no role. Apart from this, it is also used in other situations. If even 20-20 overs play is not possible then the match is called off.

Now let us understand whether the performance of the match counts or not.

If a single ball is bowled in a match, the ball played on it goes into the record books. That is, the names of Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, Shikhar Dhawan’s runs in this match were added to their career records. Along with this, Matt Henry’s wicket will also be added to his account. Similarly the number of matches also count in the team account.

Sachin Tendulkar is the top batsman even in canceled matches

Sachin Tendulkar has the most runs in the world in ODI cricket. See the coincidence that even in the canceled matches, Sachin is the highest run scorer. Sachin played 24 such ODIs which did not yield any result. In this, Master Blaster scored 518 runs at an average of 47.09. These include one century and two half-centuries.

Brett Lee of Australia has taken most wickets in abandoned or inconclusive ODIs. He has taken 13 wickets in 12 matches.
