Last week, Indian and Chinese troops briefly clashed at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh, government sources said.

Both sides “immediately disengaged from the area” after the December 9 face-off, according to the sources.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang Sector was the scene of the face-off. Indian soldiers confronted Chinese troops in a “firm and resolute manner” as they crossed the LAC.

At Galwan Valley in June 2020, over 40 Chinese soldiers and 20 Indian soldiers were killed or injured in the worst of these clashes. After the incident, the two nations engaged in a series of confrontations, including one on Pangong Lake’s South Bank.

Ladakh’s Gogra-Hot Springs were withdrawn after multiple meetings between Indian and Chinese military commanders.

As a result of “differing perceptions” of the border, such confrontations have taken place since 2006.

“There are some areas along the LAC in the Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh where perceptions differ, with both sides patrolling up to their claim lines. This has been happening since 2006. Chinese troops reached the LAC in the Tawang Sector on 09 December 2022, which was contested by local troops in a firm and resolute manner.”

In response to the incident, the Indian commander held a flag meeting with his Chinese counterpart to comply with “structured mechanisms to restore peace and tranquility”.
