Saikhom Mirabai Chanu Weightlifting: In yet another record-breaking effort, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on Saturday won India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. The 27-year-old lifted a combined weight of 201kg (88kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk) to set new sports records in all three categories.

After lifting 109 kg in her first attempt, Chanu set a new CWG record by lifting 113 kg in her second clean and jerk attempt. The record could have been better had Chanu successfully lifted 115kg in her third attempt, but she failed to pull it off.
However, Chanu failed to win gold for India. This is India’s third medal in Commonwealth Games 2022. Earlier, lifters Sanket Sagar and P Gururaja had won silver and bronze medals respectively.
After some intense competition, Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranivosoa won the silver medal and Hannah Kaminski won the bronze.
Chanu of BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021 said in an interview, “CWG is relatively easy for me, I will fight by myself. We plan to lift 91kg or 92kg in the Commonwealth Games. Hopefully that will happen last month.”
