A significant former ally today joined the BJP-led NDA, dealing Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party its second shock in as many days and strengthening the ruling coalition before the general elections of next year. The OBC-friendly Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party in eastern Uttar Pradesh declared it would support the BJP in its fight for “social justice, the security of the nation, and empowerment of those deprived of good governance, the oppressed, backward classes, Dalits, women, farmers, youth, and all weak sections of society.”
Om Prakash Rajbhar, the leader of the SBSP, posted a photo on Twitter with Home Minister Amit Shah and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and BJP Chairman JP Nadda. Om Prakash Rajbhar, who left his position as a cabinet minister during Yogi Adityanath’s first term as Chief Minister, ran in the 2022 UP elections in coalition with the Samajwadi Party.
The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) leader was welcomed to the NDA by Amit Shah, who also tweeted a photo of their meeting. When questioned about his prior stance that he would fight alongside the UP opposition parties, such as SP and BSP, if they united, Mr. Rajbhar responded that he had tried to contact all parties but had not received a response. How long should I have waited? I made an effort to communicate with everyone involved, but nobody answered. So I made the decision to join the campaign for social justice being led by the prime minister, the home minister, and the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, he told news agency ANI.
In an attack on the BJP, the Samajwadi Party said that the party’s announcement of its “PDA — Pichde, Dalit, Alpasankhyak (Backward Classes, Dalits, Minorities) formula” to defeat the incumbent BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections had alarmed the BJP. The party published many videos showing Mr. Rajbhar insulting Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Modi, as well as the BJP, and said that the government was willing to work with anyone who did so.
In a dig at the BJP’s “party with difference” campaign, the Samajwadi party said that despite OP Rajbhar and his son joining the NDA, the young people, the elderly, and the women of the underprivileged Rajbhar community do not support them. “Once the results of the election are known, both OP (Rajbhar) and the BJP will regret their errors. The statement read, “The whole backward Dalit minority is with PDA/SP.
Dara Singh Chauhan of the Samajwadi Party resigned a day before from the Uttar Pradesh Assembly from Ghosi. Mr. Chauhan, an OBC politician from east UP, served as the minister of environment and forests during Yogi Adityanath’s first term. He switched to Akhilesh Yadav’s party just prior to the 2022 state elections, and won the MLA election. Mr. Chauhan also plans to re-join the BJP after seeing Amit Shah.
JP Nadda has also sent an invitation to another OBC politician from Bihar, Chirag Paswan, who is the son of the late Ram Vilas Paswan, a famous OBC leader and former federal minister. Rajbhar is now expected to attend the July 18 NDA meeting as a show of strength ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
A major factor in the BJP’s underwhelming performance during the UP assembly elections in 2022, which determine who represents the state’s 80 MPs in the Lok Sabha, was the Samajwadi Party’s partnership with OP Rajbhar.
