Imran Khan left the hospital on Sunday, three days after being shot in the leg in a failed assassination attempt.
Since Khan was ousted in April, the shooting — and Khan’s claim that Shehbaz Sharif was involved — have significantly heightened the political temperature in the country.
A local TV channel showed Khan wearing a blue hospital gown as he left the Lahore clinic by wheelchair, according to former information minister Fawad Chaudhry.
As Khan, 70, led a political party convoy through thick crowds in Wazirabad, he was shot at by gunfire aimed at his open-top container truck.
Government officials have said the attack was the work of a lone gunman and is a “clear case of religious extremism”.
Police leaked a video of the sole suspect confessing to killing Khan because his convoy interrupted the call to prayer.
Speaking to reporters from hospital on Friday, Khan claimed Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and a senior intelligence official were behind the plot.
These claims have been dismissed as lies and fabrications by the government and military, who have threatened to sue Khan for defamation.
Prime Minister Khan, a former cricketer, was elected on a platform promising to end corruption and block the dynastic families that have historically ruled Pakistan.
As the economy languished, he lost the backing of the powerful military, considered the kingmakers in the south Asian nation, and was ousted in April.
In response, Khan has called for a snap election, holding raucous marches and rallies while claiming that the United States conspired to remove him from power.
The assassination attempt and Khan’s accusations have pushed Pakistan into a “dangerous phase”, analysts say.
The situation is perilous, said Tauseef Ahmed Khan, an academic and political analyst who serves on the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s board.
