Imran Khan FIR: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and Major General Faisal Naseer have been accused of plotting to assassinate Imran Khan. In order to file an FIR, Imran Khan refuses to withdraw the names.
After Pakistan’s former Prime Minister refused to remove the name of a senior Pakistan Army officer from the complaint, a deadlock persists over filing an FIR or police case in connection with the assassination attempt on Imran Khan. The complaint also includes the names of Pakistan’s Interior Minister (Home Minister) and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
As Imran Khan led a protest march against the Shehbaz Sharif government in the Wazirabad area of Punjab province, two gunmen fired a volley of bullets at him and others mounted on a container-mounted truck, injuring his right leg.
A religious extremist killed former Punjab governor Salman Taseer in 2011, and Mr Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, alleges that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer were involved in a sinister plot to assassinate him.
A FIR was also not being filed because some people were afraid of (some names).
Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported that Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi is caught between ‘the devil and the deep blue sea’ as Khan insists on naming the Army officer in the FIR.
During Friday’s Punjab Cabinet meeting, attended by police chief Faisal Shahkar and other senior government officials, the issue was also discussed.
According to an official informed of the development, the meeting discussed all legal aspects of registering a case.
A further delay in registering a case could spoil all efforts to secure evidence and punish the suspects involved in the armed attack on Khan’s container truck in Wazirabad, he said.
According to the source, Elahi was opposed to the ‘logic’ of naming the senior army officer in the case.
Elahi attempted to convince Imran Khan’s party leaders to drop the name of the Army officer during many meetings, the source said.
According to him, the PTI (ruling coalition partner) and the Punjab government were discussing filing an application with the police.
According to him, the police chief conveyed to the government that the FIR was the first authentic document about the commission of the cognisable offence.
Despite the arrest of three suspects, including the alleged shooter and two more suspects who provided the weapon, the investigation process has come to a grinding halt.
The police chief told the other participants at the Cabinet meeting that they had not received any application to register an assassination attempt against Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Khan.
According to the Punjab police, it would be premature to form a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) before even filing a complaint.
The meeting remained inconclusive when Elahi and the PTI’s top leadership planned to discuss the matter in another round of meetings late on Friday.
After taking a final decision in the meetings, Imran Khan’s party leaders decided to hand over a copy of the application to the Chief Minister.
Two other suspects, Waqas and Sajid Butt, who were arrested by the police on Friday, are believed to have sold the pistol and bullets to the prime suspect, Naveed Basheer.
The key suspect was handed over to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) officers in Gujranwala for further questioning.
In examining the footage recorded by a dozen CCTV cameras of the crime scene, a senior police officer told Dawn that a number of blunders had been observed.
He said the biggest blunder was the security lapse that must be prioritized during the investigation phase.
Punjab police chief raised this issue with the provincial government during Friday’s meeting of the sub-Cabinet committee, where he revealed Khan’s private security had violated the police advisory.
