Aaftab Poonawala Confession: Delhi’s most infamous murder in recent times – that of Shraddha Walker by her boyfriend Aftab Poonawalla – has thrown up a complex problem for the police. Although the accused has confessed to the murder and disposing of the body, it will not be considered as evidence. 

Poonawalla’s initial confession was not made before a magistrate, which is required to make it admissible evidence. While he reiterated the statement in court today, that too would not count, as this was a remand hearing and not an actual trial.

There are no primary witnesses and at this point the police have only circumstantial evidence of a murder that took place six months ago. The police are relying on forensic science to build an undeniable case, where every move has to be independently verified.

But in the absence of a body, the police now have to establish that Sharda was not alive after May 18. They are reaching out to his close friends and acquaintances to see if they had contacted him after May 18.

After this, the recovered human remains have to be installed as Sharda along with Poonawalla’s statement. Police is trying to get DNA match done with his father and brother. The report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory is expected within a week.

There is no murder weapon as Poonawalla claimed that he had strangled the 26-year-old. Police have recovered the tools used to mutilate the body from him, but there is little hope of forensic evidence from them six months later.

Today police focused on the bathroom where the body was dismembered into 35 pieces. Sources said that after breaking the tiles, they found evidence of blood, which has also been sent for DNA test.

Though the police plan to conduct a polygraph or narco-analysis test on Poonawalla, the report will not be admissible even in the court. The preliminary process of lie detector test was conducted today.

The motive for the murder is also a problem, as Poonawalla has claimed that it was not premeditated and that he strangled her in a fit of rage during an argument.

Police are working on finding digital evidence and statements of her friends which would establish that the woman was regularly beaten and tortured.
