Just like any other student, she would go to college every day, chat with friends, and eat at the canteen. There was only one problem: she wasn’t student. Her mission was to gather evidence on the horrors of ragging on campus as an undercover cop.

The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College in Indore recently experienced a crackdown against ragging led by 24-year-old Shalini Chouhan, a constable with the Madhya Pradesh police.
During the course of three months, she identified 11 senior students who were allegedly involved in brutal ragging of first-year students. Three months have now passed since the seniors were suspended from college and the hostel.
In an interview with IndiNews, Ms Chauhan and her senior, Inspector Tehzeeb Qazi, discussed the undercover operation.
Student complaints about ragging on campus had been received anonymously, Mr Qazi said. First-year students were allegedly forced to perform vulgar acts, such as pretending to have sex with pillows. The complainants, however, did not name themselves or the accused, possibly out of fear of further harassment, the officer said.
Our officers checked the campus, but students were so scared that they didn’t come forward after seeing us in uniform. We tried to track down the complaints’ contact numbers, but the helpline’s policy prohibited it.
“So we went back to good old ground-level policing. Shalini and other constables spent time on and around the campus in plain clothes, conversing with students at the canteen and tea stalls nearby. They discovered that junior students were suffering horrifying experiences as they began talking to them. “Then we got witnesses and cracked the case,” said Mr Qazi.
IndiNews reported that it was an “entirely new experience” for the brave policewoman. “I would go to college everyday disguised as a student.” she said. I spoke to students at the canteen. I would talk about myself, and gradually they started opening up and confiding in me. They told me the names of those involved in ragging juniors,” she said.
“Sometimes they would ask questions, but I would evade them and change topics. The canteen would be crowded, so they didn’t give much thought,” she said.
On her undercover visits to the campus, she said she would carry a bag with books and dress up like a college student.
