Gujarat Assembly Election 2022: Gujarat’s Assembly elections will take place in two phases, on December 1 and December 5, the Election Commission announced today. As with the Himachal Pradesh elections, the results will be announced on December 8.
A recent bridge collapse in Morbi, which killed 135 people, prompted the much-awaited announcement. In fact, Rajiv Kumar began his interaction with the media by paying tribute to those who lost their lives.
As per the Election Commission’s schedule, the gazette notification will be issued the day after tomorrow and nominations for the election must be filed by November 14. Nominations must be withdrawn by November 17. A total of 89 seats will vote in the first phase, while 93 seats will vote in the second phase.
According to the panel, the current Assembly’s tenure ends on February 18 next year, dispelling allegations of a delay. Before finalizing the dates, several factors, including weather, were considered.
EVM tampering allegations were also addressed by the Chief Election Commissioner. Actions and results speak louder than words. Parties critical of the commission have had surprise results in elections. Some have questioned EVMs, but remain silent when they win elections using the same technology,” he concluded.
With the entry of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) into Gujarat’s political landscape, it may end up being a three-cornered fight.
With the Morbi bridge collapse revealing glaring lapses, the Bhupendra Patel dispensation, which has ruled the state for nearly 25 years, is on the backfoot.
After a thumping victory in Punjab earlier this year, the AAP is pushing hard to become a key player in Gujarat after earlier attempts were unsuccessful.
By putting up its best performance in decades, the Congress dented the BJP’s performance in 2017. However, the ruling party retained power.
The AAP, which has launched an extensive campaign featuring Mr Kejriwal and other senior party figures, is also challenging the Congress this time. Grand old party leaders, however, are confident of a victory and say their door-to-door campaign is going well. AIMIM and the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AAP have been called “B teams” of the BJP by the party.
The ruling BJP, however, still has the advantage of a formidable election machinery and a wide support base. BJP will leave no stone unturned to ensure victory in Gujarat, as the poll is also a prestige battle for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
