Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which is not a member of the ‘I.N.D.I.A’ coalition, also filed a no-confidence motion.
A no-confidence motion can only be passed if 50 members of the house support it. It is expected that the Congress motion will gain the necessary support, however the BRS only holds 9 Lok Sabha seats.
A total of 331 votes are currently held by the ruling NDA in the Lok Sabha, which has 543 members. In the house, there are 144 members of the Opposition I.N.D.I.A alliance.
Despite not having the numbers to win a floor test, opposition parties claim they will win the battle of perception by cornering the government over Manipur.
Despite the government’s insistence that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will respond to the debate on the Manipur situation, they argue that it is also a strategy to make the prime minister speak in Parliament about the crucial matter.
As of July 20, the monsoon session of Parliament has been characterized by protests and sloganeering by opposition members.
In response, the government has said it is prepared for a discussion about Manipur, but the opposition parties are pushing for a voting-based discussion.
