Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021 has been awarded to Gita Press from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, according to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. According to the Congress MP, the decision, taken by a jury headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was a “travesty” to award Hindutva idol VD Savarkar and Mahatma Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse. Akshaya Mukul’s 2015 book on Gita Press also revealed the “stormy relations” the publisher had with Mahatma Gandhi, he claimed.
In 1995, the Government of India instituted the Gandhi Peace Prize to honor Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals on the 125th anniversary of his birth. This year marks the centennial of Gita Press.
Over the past century, the publisher, one of the world’s largest, has done “commendable work.”
In a tweet this morning, the Prime Minister congratulated GitaPress, Gorakhpur on receiving the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 for its contribution to advancing social and cultural transformations among the people over the last 100 years.
“Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 recognizes Gita Press’s unparalleled contribution to collective upliftment of humanity, personifying Gandhian living in its true sense,” said a government release.
A citation, a plaque, and an exquisite traditional handicraft or handloom item are included in the award.
Mr Ramesh was called a “Hindu-hating party” by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT) was also taunted for allying with the grand old party despite its alleged attacks on Hinduism, Hindutva, and even Savarkar, which Mr Thackeray has called his god.
Hindu terror, opposition to Ram Mandir, Bhagwa terror, blaming Hindus for 26/11, and now the attack on Gita Press are all examples of Congress’ hatred of anything Hindu.

“Congress hates Gita Press because is spread the real message of Sanatan & Hinduism to every nook and corner,” Mr Poonawalla said in another tweet attacking Congress.
“Congress finds Muslim league as secular but Gita Press is communal ; Zakir Naik is shanti ka messiah but Gita Press is communal,” he added, referring to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s recent defence of his party’s ally in Kerala.
