A gangster was shot and killed outside a courtroom in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, while a cop was shot in the leg, raising yet another question about law and order.
According to reports, the shooter was dressed as a lawyer.
As seen in a video, gangster Sanjiv Maheshwari, also known as Sanjiv Jeeva, was slumped on the ground bleeding from gunshot wounds.
“The incident took place around 3:30 pm. A woman and her child were also injured. Two of our policemen were also shot. They are safe. Sanjeev Jeeva was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead,” Upendra Agarwal, Joint CP, Law and Order, Lucknow Police said.
“The attacker has been arrested,” said the officer, adding that multiple attackers are under investigation.
One of the attackers was handed over to the police by lawyers present at the court, according to reports.
During his entry into a local court in the Kaiserbagh area of the city, a gangster dressed in a green shirt and blue jeans was shot at.
In the state, Sanjiv Jeeva was charged with a dozen criminal cases and ran several criminal syndicates. In Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, at least 50 criminal cases were filed against him during his many years in jail.
According to some reports, he was also associated with Mukhtar Ansari, a gangster from eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Exactly how the attacker gained access to the courthouse with a revolver is unclear.
In just two months, Atiq Ahmed, a gangster in police custody, was shot dead.
