First milestone in India’s ambitious space mission, Gaganyaan, took off today from Sriharikota following an unmanned test flight.
This flight abort test was conducted to test the efficiency of the vehicle’s crew escape system, which will be used in case astronauts need to eject in case of an emergency.
This mission was a demonstration of the crew escape system, and we are very happy to announce its success. S Somanath, of the Indian Space Research Organisation, said the vehicle reached a speed slightly above the speed of sound before the crew escape system kicked in.
It was very well executed, including the touch-down at sea, after the escape system detached the crew module from the vehicle.
Currently, the agency is working to retrieve the crew modules from the sea, according to Mr Somanath.
It was originally planned to launch Test Vehicle D1 at 8 am, but that was revised to 8.45 am. The countdown stopped just 5 seconds before launch. A successful test was pulled off at 10am as a result of ISRO identifying the cause.
It is the predecessor mission to the Gaganyaan programme, which aims to send humans into space for three days on a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of 400km.
Gaganyaan, scheduled for launch in 2024, will demonstrate India’s human spaceflight capabilities. In addition to setting up a space station by 2035, the country will develop a Venus orbiter and a Mars lander.
