First Kill For 2 Cheetahs: PTI reported that two of the eight African cheetahs released in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park in mid-September made their first kill within 24 hours after being released into a larger enclosure.
Cheetahs hunted a cheetal (spotted deer) either on Sunday night or early Monday morning, officials told PTI. After their translocation, this was their first prey.
After being quarantined since September 17, Freddie and Elton were released into the larger enclosure on November 5.
On November 5, they were moved from quarantine zones to an acclimatisation enclosure and will eventually be released into the wild.
According to the PM yesterday, the cheetahs were healthy, active, and adjusting well.
As a result of the mandatory quarantine, two cheetahs have been released to bigger enclosures for further adaptation to the Kuno habitat. Others will follow soon. PM Modi tweeted along with a short video of the two wild cats that “I am glad that all cheetahs are healthy, active and adjusting well.”
According to international standards, wild animals are quarantined for a month before and after being translocated to another country to prevent the spread of infection.
According to a member of the Centre’s task force on the big cats, the cheetahs are currently housed in six enclosures and fed buffalo meat.
During a function held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, the wild cats were reintroduced to Kuno National Park as part of the ambitious “Project Cheetah”.
During a phased effort to bring the big cats back to India, eight cheetahs — five females and three males — were translocated from Namibia. They were named Freddy, Alton, Savannah, Sasha, Obaan, Asha, Cibili and Saisa.
