Around 125 patients were evacuated from a 10-storey hospital in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad city on Sunday after a fire broke out in the hospital’s basement, officials said.
Sahibaug police inspector M D Champavat said no casualties have been reported so far.
A fire official said several items stored in the basement caught fire during renovations at the hospital.
Champavat said the fire broke out around 4.30 am in the basement of Rajasthan Hospital, located in Sahibaug.
Smoke continues to emanate from the basement of the hospital, where the fire broke out, as firefighters try to contain the blaze.
As a precautionary measure, nearly 125 patients have been evacuated and transferred to different hospitals, the police inspector said.
A charitable trust runs the hospital.
At around 4.30 am, deputy chief fire officer Jayesh Khadia received a call reporting a fire in the second basement of the 10-storey Rajasthan Hospital.
The hospital’s basement was filled with smoke due to the ongoing renovations. Firefighters rushed to the scene in around two dozen vehicles.
As of yet, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
