England Won T20 World Cup 2022: England were on Sunday crowned champions of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup as they beat Pakistan by 5 wickets to eventually seal a comprehensive victory. It is England’s second T20 World Cup win, 12 years after Paul Collingwood’s team defeated Australia to win the first ICC title for the ‘Three Lions’ in 2010.
The ball restricted Pakistan to a low of 137 runs to take the team home after Ben Stokes scored an unbeaten half-century from Sam Curran. England has now become the first team to hold the 50-over World Cup and the T20 World Cup title together.
Pakistan needed a big-hearted bowling performance to stay in the match, they did just that.
Shaheen Shah Afridi produced a peach of a delivery to score 1 to England semifinal star Alex Hales in the very first over of the chase, giving Pakistan the needed start after an ineffective performance with the bat.
Captain Jos Buttler fought fire with fire as he scored a bunch of graceful strokes to bring England into the powerplay. Phil Salt’s short stop in the middle hit two fours but he became the first victim of Haris Rauf, handing a simple catch to Iftikhar at mid-wicket as the ‘Three Lions’ slipped to 32/2. A clearly pumped-up Rauf returned to pick up the big wicket of Butler (26) as a sea of green broke out at the Colosseum-esque Melbourne Cricket Ground.
England Thump Pakistan By 5 Wickets To Win 2nd T20 World Cup Title
With the Powerplay still at 45/3, Pakistan had bounced back in the match and now a lot rests on the shoulders of England’s 2019 World Cup hero Ben Stokes.
Stokes and Brooke put on a total of 80 runs and kept the asking rate within a comfortable range, but Shadab Khan scored 20 runs later in his last over to bowl England out for 84/4.
Naseem Shah made a spectacular comeback in the match by bowling two tight overs as the asking rate started climbing.
But a major change took place when Pakistan’s leading fast bowler Shaheen was thrown out of the field by bowling the first ball of the 16th over. To end the over, part time off-spinner Iftikhar was given the ball and he nearly got Ben Stokes out. The ball fell to Babar Azam at long off and Stokes hit a four and a six off the last two balls to bring the equation down to 28 runs needed off 24 balls.
Moeen started the next over off Mohammad Wasim with two consecutive fours and ended it with another one as England needed 12 to win in 3 overs.
England Ride On Ben Stokes And Sam Curran’s Brilliance To Win 2nd T20 World Cup Title, Beat Pakistan By 5 Wickets In Final
With 6 runs required off 11 balls, Mohammad Wasim ended Ali’s 19-run cameo to take Pakistan’s breath away.
Pakistan were called to bat first after England captain Butler won the toss. Pakistan captain Babar Azam and opening partner Mohammad Rizwan tried to get the team off to a steady start but Curran gave England an early breakthrough and Rizwan cut his stumps for an individual score of 15.
England have kept the Pakistan batsmen on a tight leash giving only 39 runs in the powerplay. Babar dropped anchor but wickets kept falling around him as Mohammad Haris (8) failed to bring his attacking game to the fore in the summit clash, falling into the net of Adil Rashid.
Babar and left-armer Shan Masood brought some stability to the innings with their watchful approach, helping the team reach 68/2 after 10 overs. Masood attacked in an over from Liam Livingstone and took Pakistan to 84/2 after 11 overs.
But then wickets started falling as Rashid dismissed Babar for 32 and Stokes sent back the dangerous Iftikhar Ahmed for a duck.
Shahab Khan hit some big shots to put Pakistan in a position where they could score 150-plus, but they had no answer to the excellence of Kuren, who returned to dismiss Shan Masood for 38 .
Chris Jordan accounted for Shadab (20) and a few lucky strokes took Pakistan to 137/8.
Sam Curran (3/12) was the star of the show for England with Adil Rashid (2/22) and Chris Jordan (2/27) providing the supporting cast.
