In Rawalpindi on Thursday, England became the first team to score 500 runs in a Test match. The tourists cantered to 506-4 at the close of play as four English batsmen scored centuries. Against South Africa in Sydney in 1910, Australia accumulated 494 runs on the first day.

Three times by England and once by Sri Lanka, but never on the opening day of a test, more than 500 runs have been scored in a day.

In 1936, England scored 588 against India on day two of a test.

With centuries from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, England’s ‘Bazball’ brand of cricket broke records in Rawalpindi as they beat Pakistan by 506-4.

Crawley (122 off 111), Duckett (107 off 110), Pope (108 off 104) and Brook (101no off 81) helped England score 500 runs on the opening day of a Test.

England Pulverise Pakistan

In his first red-ball appearance since 2016, Ben Duckett scored a maiden ton from 105 as he completed an 86-ball century, the fastest by an England opener in Test cricket. After skipper Ben Stokes decided to bat, the pair put on 233 for the first wicket on a placid pitch.

Earlier, Pope had reached three figures from 90 deliveries in the evening session before Brook raced to a first Test century from 80 balls after hitting Pakistan spinner Saud Shakeel for six fours.

As Brook reached 84 from 62 balls, he was within sight of Gilbert Jessop’s 76-ball hundred against Australia at The Kia Oval in 1902, Brook’s hundred being the third fastest by an Englishman.

The run rate across the 75 overs bowled by England was an astonishing 6.74, surpassing the most runs ever scored on a Test-match day in Pakistan – 417.

The attacking style of cricket under head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Stokes that had yielded six wins out of seven during the home summer was evident as early as the 14-run first over, when Crawley struck three fours off Pakistan quick Naseem Shah – one edged, two timed.

Crawley and Duckett secured their fifty-stand inside nine overs, their century salvo inside 14, and the tourists took lunch on 174-0, fulfilling McCullum’s pre-series promise. With 28 boundaries in 27 overs and a run-rate of 6.44, the tourists scored their highest runs in a first session, having struck 28 boundaries in 27 overs.

In a late cameo, skipper Stokes (34no off 15) hit six fours and a six before bad light forced an early end to the match. Pope and Brook, in particular, continued the carnage.

In the absence of Shaheen Shah Afridi due to appendicitis surgery and a right knee injury, Pakistan have been hindered, and their inexperienced attack – which includes spinners Shakeel and Zahid Mahmood and seamers Haris Rauf and Mohammad Ali – has often been ineffective.
