Both Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow had 19 runs and Jonny Bairstow had 6. After breaking a world record with his bat, the fast-bowling captain of the visitors, Jasprit Bumrah, led by example in his main job and took all three English wickets in their first innings. This was after Bumrah hit a helpless Stuart Broad for 29 runs, breaking the world record for most runs scored in a single over in a Test match by one run over the great Brian Lara.

Robin Peterson, who before today had given up the most runs in an over in the history of Test cricket (28), poked fun at Stuart Broad by saying, “Sad to lose my record today. Oh well, I guess records are meant to be broken. Now on to the next.”
Under the dark skies of Edgbaston, Rishabh Pant took another step toward becoming a great player. He hit 146 runs off 111 balls, which was an amazing display of counterpunching that made India win the first day of the series-deciding game.
England had the match in their iron grip for most of the day. After James Anderson and Matthew Potts worked together to get India down to 98/5, Pant and Ravindra Jadeja added 222 runs to get India out of trouble and even put them in the lead. When they went their separate ways, India had made 320 runs.
