Sources told the Press Trust of India that a personal hearing scheduled for Tuesday by the Election Commission to settle the Lok Janshakti Party’s symbol dispute has been postponed as Chirag Paswan sought the postponement due to his preoccupation with the Gujarat assembly elections.
The Election Commission had called the factions led by Chirag Paswan and Pashupati Kumar Paras for a personal hearing at Election Commission’s headquarters Nirvachan Sadan this afternoon.
Sources said Mr Paswan had sought a postponement claiming he was busy with the recent Gujarat assembly elections, voting for which would be held on December 1 and 5.
Sources said that the Election Commission has not yet fixed the new date.
In its interim order in October 2021, the commission had restrained the two rival groups from using the name Lok Janshakti Party or its symbol ‘Bangla’ till the dispute between them is settled.
Paswan’s faction is now known as the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and has the symbol of a helicopter.
The rival faction led by his uncle has been allotted its symbol to Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party and Sewing Machine.
After the demise of LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan in 2020, his son Chirag Paswan and the late leader’s brother Paras staked claim on the party leadership and approached the Election Commission in this regard.
