Almost five years after Abdul Lahir Hassan’s daughter married a Keralite from Kasaragod in 2017, Mr Hassan wouldn’t have imagined that five years later, his son-in-law would allegedly defraud him of around 107 crores and 1,000 sovereigns worth of gold jewellery.

Muhammad Hafiz is also alleged to have gotten ownership of some of the businessman’s properties, according to a complaint made by Hassan to Aluva police around three months ago.
With the amount involved exceeding 100 crore, and the accused still at large and reportedly in Goa, the investigation of the case was handed over to the Crime Branch of the Kerala police on Thursday, November 24.
The complainant, Mr Abdul Lahir Hassan, told a TV channel that Aluva police had not arrested the accused or even called him for questioning. They had also failed to recover the vehicle that he had been given for his use.
According to Hassan, the alleged fraud or cheating began when his son-in-law asked for around 4 crore to pay a fine imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate.
Mr Hassan told the channel that his son-in-law obtained over 92 crore from him under various pretexts, such as buying land or opening a footwear store.
According to a police officer, Mr Hassan’s son-in-law had an accomplice, Akshay Thomas Vaidyan.
Both of them were named in Mr Hassan’s complaint to the police, the officer said.
