There aren’t always happy endings in Indian cricket. It seems the same is true for Murali Vijay. He says he’s “almost done” with Indian cricket after 61 Tests (3982 runs), 17 ODIs (339 runs), and nine T20Is (169 runs).

Until recently, the 38-year-old played in Tamil Nadu Premier League. He last played for India in December 2018 in a Test match against Australia in Perth.

Murali Vijay says he’s having trouble getting opportunities in Indian cricket because of his age.

I’m almost done with BCCI (smiles) and want to find my way abroad. Play a little bit of competitive cricket,” Vijay told WV Raman on Wednesdays with WV.

“After 30, it’s a taboo in India. They see us as 80-year-olds walking on the street. I don’t want to get into any controversy. The media should also address it differently. I think you’re peaking in your 30s. Luckily, the opportunities aren’t as great as they used to be, and I have to look outside for my opportunities.”

“Maybe if I had Virender Sehwag’s backing, things would have turned out differently.”

Vijay pulled out of the Tamil Nadu squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2020. He played in an amateur golf tournament recently. They played in the Chennai Open Golf Championship.
