India is set to launch Digi Yatra today for seamless and hassle-free air travel. Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) is used in Digi Yatra to achieve contactless and seamless processing of passengers at airports.
Through the project, passengers may pass through airport checkpoints using facial recognition to establish their identity, which can then be linked to their boarding passes using paperless and contactless technology.
The service will initially be available only at seven airports and for domestic flight passengers.
By March 2023, it will be available at three airports — Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi — followed by four airports — Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Vijayawada. In the future, the technology will be implemented across the country.
In order to use this facility, a one-time registration on the Digi Yatra app using Aadhaar-based validation and self-image capture is required.
PII is not stored centrally. Passengers’ IDs and travel credentials are stored in a secure wallet on their smartphones.
