An earthquake in a remote region of Nepal Friday night killed at least 132 people and injured dozens more. Nearly 550 km from the epicentre, New Delhi felt strong tremors caused by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake.

As a result of the earthquake that struck late on Friday night in Jajarkot, several houses were flattened or damaged. Large pieces of furniture were scattered across the site, along with crumbling facades of multi-story brick houses.

Social media photos show locals digging through rubble to retrieve survivors from collapsed homes and buildings after dark.

We are trying to identify the damages,” Santosh Rokka, a police official, said. “Houses have collapsed. People have flooded out. I am among the crowd of terrified residents.

Jajarkot is a hilly district with 190,000 people and a number of villages scattered throughout remote hills, where rescue operations are ongoing despite difficulties in establishing contact with areas.

Gopal Chandra Bhattarai, a spokesman for Karnali Province police, told AFP that road damage had blocked some roads, but they were working on alternative routes to access the area.

Search and rescue operations are also being assisted by the Nepali army.

To facilitate the airlift of injured from affected areas, all helicopter operators in Nepal have been told to be on standby.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and damage to property caused by the earthquake in Nepal,” said Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal.

There are frequent earthquakes in Nepal due to the colliding Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates that form the Himalayas.

Nepal was struck by two earthquakes in 2015 that killed about 9,000 people. Six billion dollars was lost in economic losses due to the destruction of entire towns, centuries-old temples, and other historic sites.
