Cyrus Mistry Dies, who succeeded Ratan Tata as chairman of the conglomerate but was later ousted in India’s most high-profile boardroom coup, was killed in a car accident in Maharashtra’s Palghar on Sunday, said police.
Mr Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car, it added.
Two other persons travelling with him, including the car driver, were injured. All the injured persons have been shifted to a hospital in Gujarat.
Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter, has tweeted condolences.
“Devastating News My Brother Cyrus Mistry passed away. Can’t believe it. Rest in Peace Cyrus,” said a shocked Ms Sule.
Photos from the crash site show the broken remains of a silver Mercedes car. The accident happened when the car rammed into a road divider in the Charoti area of Palghar, 135 km from Mumbai.
Palghar district superintendent of police Balasaheb Patil said, “The accident happened around 3.15 pm, when Mistry was on his way from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. The accident happened on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems to be an accident.”
Two other people traveling with him, including the driver of the car, were injured. All the injured have been admitted to a hospital in Gujarat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning the loss of the business tycoon, calling it a “huge loss” to the world of commerce and industry.
“The untimely demise of Mr. Cyrus Mistry is shocking. He was a promising business leader who believed in the economic power of India. His passing is a great loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace. In peace,” PM Modi tweeted.
