Several hundred trees were uprooted in Chengalpattu and Chennai after the cyclone made landfall near Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) in Tamil Nadu around 11.30pm on Friday.

Up to 115 mm of rain fell on Chennai. According to Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Greater Chennai Corporation’s Commissioner, around 200 trees have fallen and we have been clearing them since nightfall. “We were able to prevent major damage by securing many hoardings early,” he said. There was also waterlogging in the city. Chennai city and Chengalpattu districts are experiencing power outages due to work clearing fallen trees.

A number of boats and shops along the seashore in Kovalam, adjacent to Mamallapuram, have been damaged. Shobana Thangam, President of Kovalam Village Panchayat, said, “The tin roofs of shops have been blown away. Fisheries and revenue officials are examining damage to boats.”

Due to bad weather, 13 domestic flights and three international flights were cancelled at the Chennai airport prior to landfall. In a tweet, Chennai International Airport stated, “Passengers should contact their respective airline(s) for further information.”.

In terms of intensity, it was previously classified as ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’, meaning winds of 89-117 km/h. The storm has since been downgraded to a ‘cyclonic storm’ with winds between 62 and 88 km/h. (The most extreme type is a ‘Super Cyclonic Storm,’ with winds of 222+ mph.)

Tamil Nadu has opened more than 5,000 relief centers in addition to stationing National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in ten districts. There are 28 such centers in Chengalpattu district alone, housing 1,058 families.

On Saturday, heavy rain was reported in several parts of Andhra Pradesh’s south coastal and Rayalaseema districts. The AP government reported that Naidupeta in Tirupati district received 281.5 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday.

As a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the UAE named the cyclone. The Arabic word means “treasure box” and is pronounced “Man-Dous.”

The cyclone moves slowly and absorbs a lot of moisture. As wind speeds increase, the cyclone gains strength. In an official statement from the weather department, it was predicted that the cyclone would maintain its intensity of ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ until early Friday morning, and then gradually weaken thereafter. That happened.

Tropical cyclone warning centers and regional meteorological centers around the world name cyclones. Five tropical warning centers and six regional centers exist.
