Crocodile Bike: If it’s not raining, the waterfront is a popular place for the whole family to walk, scooter or cycle. If you don’t have wheels, you can rent an ‘alligator bike’ for a surprisingly fun family activity.
Kids can ring the bell and pedal while strapped in, but they need to be quite tall to help with the pedaling, so make sure there are enough adults in your group! You can take a break from pedaling at a number of places along the way, including the playgrounds near Freyberg Pool, Waitangi Park (near where you pick up the crocodile bike), and Frank Kitts Park (near where you pick up the crocodile bike). Poneke Cafe on Clyde Quay is open at 7am weekdays and 8am weekends for takeaway coffee and snacks. Take a break to see the Waka (Maori canoes). While the Wharewaka on Odlins Plaza is closed, you can view them through large glass windows.
Good ice cream stopping points are Kaffee Ees in Frank Kitts Lagoon (open from 9.30am) and Gelissimo Gelato on Odlins Plaza, which is located under the Stock Exchange building. Or wait until you return your Alligator bike and experience the craziness of a Whimsical Shake, or a simple ice cream at Alligator Bike Shop.
People often ride multi-seat crocodile bikes on the waterfront. There are bikes suitable for small groups and large groups (small children can be seat belted in to the front compartment). The rental price is reasonable. You can hire for half an hour or an hour. We have done this a couple of times and a half hour is usually sufficient. After riding around the water front for that long, you’re pretty poofed. As per their signage, they sometimes require a $50 refundable bond, but we have never been asked to pay it. It’s a hit with our kids.
