Covid Drills Held Across Cities, Health Minister Does Hospital Check

Hospitals across the country will hold a drill today to see how prepared they are for COVID. Health ministers from the states will lead the exercise.

Safdarjung Hospital’s drill was overseen by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. “Such exercises will help our operational readiness, help us fill gaps if any, and strengthen our public health response,” Mandaviya said at a meeting with the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

During the drill, we’ll focus on parameters like the availability of health facilities in all districts, isolation beds, oxygen-supported beds, ICU beds, and ventilator beds.

We’ll also talk about human resource capacity, like healthcare professionals trained in COVID management and medical oxygen plant operators.

Last week, Rajesh Bhushan wrote to all states and union territories asking them to hold the drill.

There were earlier spikes in Covid cases, especially in the second wave. These spikes had brought the health infrastructure to its knees, causing patients to struggle to breathe due to lack of medical oxygen and relatives to struggle to find beds.

104 crore has been approved for hospitals to buy general medicines as part of preparations for Covid.

Residents of Delhi can now access real-time data on beds, oxygen cylinders, and ventilators on a government portal starting Tuesday, according to PTI.

The state has introduced precautionary measures by requiring masks in theatres and schools. Bars and restaurants also have to get two doses of Covid.

Ma Subramanian, Tamil Nadu’s health minister, asked people to wear masks in crowded places, saying Covid protocols had never been relaxed.

West Bengal’s government has a six-point plan focused on genomic surveillance, oxygen capacity, testing, and emergency response.
