An alleged multi-crore heist was scuttled by a craving for a fruit-flavoured drink near Uttarakhand’s Hemkund Sahib.

Jaswinder Singh and Mandeep Kaur are believed to be the masterminds behind the daring heist at the Ludhiana office of a cash management firm. The office of CMS Services was robbed on June 10 by armed robbers who stole more than 8 crores in cash.

Mandeep Kaur and Jaswinder Singh went on a pilgrimage to Sikh shrine Hemkund Sahib after the robbery, apparently to thank God for their success, according to Ludhiana Police Commission Mandeep Singh Sidhu.

It was reported that the couple planned to flee to Nepal, but a lookout notice prevented them from doing so. Before planning their next step, they visited Hemkund Sahib, Kedarnath, and Haridwar.

Despite knowing Mandeep Kaur and Jaswinder Singh were at Hemkund Sahib, police struggled to identify them in the crowd of devotees.

Devotees were given packets of a fruit-flavoured drink at a free drinks kiosk. Unaware of the trap, the couple came to the kiosk, uncovered their faces, and drank. Despite identifying them, the police did not take any action. After the couple finished praying, they waited for them to finish.

After their prayers, police arrested them as they walked out of the shrine. After a short chase, the two were caught.

Sidhu said 21 lakh was recovered from the couple. So far, nearly 6 crores of the loot have been recovered by the police. Nine people have been arrested in connection with the case, according to the police.

Punjab Police Chief Gaurav Yadav said the kingpins of the Ludhiana heist were arrested within 100 hours. A professional and scientific approach was used by police teams to solve the multi-crore robbery, he said.

This should serve as a chilling reminder for all anti-social elements, according to the Ludhiana Police’s official Twitter account.
