Santokh Singh Chaudhary, a Congress MP from Punjab, died of a heart attack this morning. 76 was his age.

Santokh Singh Chaudhary, the party’s MP from Jalandhar, collapsed during the march. In an ambulance, he was taken to a hospital in Phagwara, where he died.

Rahul Gandhi left the yatra midway and went to the hospital where the veteran Congress leader was being treated, a party official said. Soon he’ll meet Mr Chaudhary’s family in Jalandhar.

Yatra has been suspended.

Congress’ mega foot march began Wednesday from Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab.

Mallikarjun Kharge said Mr Chaudhary’s death is a “great blow to the party and organization”.

My heart goes out to his family, friends and followers. I’m deeply shocked and saddened about the untimely passing of our MP, Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary. “It’s a great blow to his party and organization. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.

In a tweet, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “Santokh Singh Chaudhary, 76, Congress MP from Jalandhar, passed away during the Bharat Jodo Yatra this morning after a sudden cardiac arrest.” I extend my deepest condolences to his family. A few changes will be made to the yatra soon.

Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also expressed condolences.

In 2014 and 2019, Chaudhary won the Lok Sabha elections twice. Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary is a Congress MLA in Phillaur.
