Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge with senior party leaders Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar and KC Venugopal won the elections in the second week of May, 2023 in Delhi. Now the next event is to select the chief minister of Karnataka. The selection body is interested to select Siddaramaiah for the second time as a chief minister but DK Shivakumar is interested to take the charge of the seat this time as he has been a supporter and well-wisher of the party. 

Siddaramaiah, had started his political journey in 2006 who has completed his 5 years terms other than Devraj Urs. The anointing of the lawyer-turned-politician as the CM pick has the support of 85 MLAs as per a report sent by the three Congress observers to the party high command and therefore a strong candidate in the elections as well as a nominee for the chief minister of Karnataka state.

DK Shivakumar on the other hand, is an Indian politician and member of the Indian National Congress party. He has previously served as the Minister of Energy in the Government of Karnataka. He has been involved in several controversies, including charges of tax evasion and corruption, but has also enjoyed a significant following among his supporters.

DK Shivakumar has been actively involved in politics since the 1980s. He was first elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1989 and subsequently won the elections in 1994, 1999, 2004, 2008, 2013, and 2018.

Shivakumar held various portfolios in the Karnataka Government, including Minister for Irrigation, Minister for Power, and Minister for Energy. He is widely credited with initiating several new projects and policies to improve the electricity supply in Karnataka during his tenure as the Minister of Energy.

Shivakumar has also been actively involved in the Indian National Congress party. He has held various positions within the party, including serving as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

However, Shivakumar has faced several controversies in his political career. He has been accused of several financial irregularities, including tax evasion and corruption. In 2017, he was raided by the Income Tax Department, which led to a lot of criticism from his supporters.

Despite these controversies, Shivakumar remains a popular figure in Karnataka politics and has a significant following among his supporters.

In March 2021, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a charge sheet against DK Shivakumar and his associates in a money laundering case. He has been accused of illegally acquiring assets worth Rs 74.93 crore. The ED claimed that Shivakumar had taken bribes from various sources and used the money to acquire properties in his name and that of his family members. The case is still ongoing.

The charge sheet against him t4September 2019, Shivakumar was arrested by the ED in a money laundering case. He spent over a month in custody before being granted bail by the Delhi High Court. The case is related to the alleged illegal transaction of Rs 8.4 crore in hawala transactions.

Despite these legal issues, Shivakumar continues to hold a prominent position in the Congress party and remains active in state politics. He is considered to be a strong leader in the party and enjoys a significant support base in Karnataka.

According to sources, most recently he was offered two offers, the first choice to have given Mr Shivakumar the position of the state’s sole Deputy Chief Minister in addition to his existing position as leader of the state party unit. In addition, he had his pick of six ministries.

However, a two hour meeting was not fruitful at all and so is the mystery. The main reason for the whole episode is that Shivakumar has been demanding for the top post, as he has been very active for the last four years rebuilding and taking the party to a greater height. The deadlock between the two strong headed leaders is continuing as DK Shivakumar has bugged out the offer to take charge of the office but with a changed outlook. 

The Shivakumar camp’s resolution was that the president of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) should be given the CM’s post as he had revived and developed the party organization at a time when it was hit by defections and desertions. 

The Congress party is still undergoing several meetings and the elective body is trying to come on a mutual agreement. One solution is to share the power between the two politicians where Siddaramaiah is going to take the charge for initial two years followed by DK Shivakumar for the remaining three years. The funny part is that both of the politicians have turned down the offer. Both of the politicians are being supported by common masses means that they are both powerful in their domains. If the tiff remains with the politicians, the government might collapse. That will be the worst case scenario. 

The latest updates are that the Congress party has suggested a 

rotational tenure for both the candidates. The swearing-in of the new chief will take place on May 20, it ultimately ends the soar uncertainty among the party as well. The four days of high voltage drama rests in peace now as both of the Congress members have mutually agreed to share the throne with the help of the higher authority of the Congress party.
